Current research indicates that our local black youth, regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds, contend with negative depictions of their culture. These depictions, both obvious and subtle, often result in negative perceptions of self. These destructive beliefs can affect many given areas of a child's life and including their mental and physical health, academic success and overall functioning. Indicating the critical need to help them build a positive identity and self-esteem, and provide models for healthy living.
In response to these pressing issues, our chapter is committed to delivering programing that focuses on positively impacting the physical and mental health, self-esteem and academic achievement of local black youth. By exposing them to culturally relevant activities and experiences we look to help them see themselves as truly part of the greater community.
